Regina Mundi

A landmark in Rockville, Soweto Regina Mundi is the largest Roman Catholic Church in South Africa. The name of the church is from the Latin translation for queen of the world “Reginae Mundi”.

A place in South Africa's Political History

During the struggle against apartheid, the church opened its doors to anti-apartheid groups and gave shelter to activists fighting against apartheid. But it was during the youth uprising in 1976 that Regina Mundi cam to the fore.

In an attempt to escape police bullets and the onslaught of teargas, protesting students ran to the church to seek shelter. The students were followed by police who continued firing live ammunition. Holes in the church ceiling and a damaged marble stand bear evidence of these events.

A second foray into the history of South Africa, albeit with the same backdrop, apartheid, began in 1995 and continued for nearly three years. Presided over by Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu the Truth and Reconciliation Hearings took place here.

The role that this church played across these occasions earned it the title of “the Peoples Church” and honours and memorial tributes adorn the church in the form of paintings, sculpture and the stained glass windows.

About the art in the Regina Mundi Catholic Church

The Black Madonna as it is commonly known or The Madonna and Child of Soweto was created by artist Larry Scully in 1973 as a contribution towards raising funds for the education of black South Africans.

The stained glass windows depicting scenes from the life of Mary were donated to the church by Poland in 1998.

Memorials also include a large park in front of the church and a 'peace pole' donated by the Japanese.

There is a plaque registering the churches rich history.
