From as far back as the ancient Persians and the Middle Eastern countries, belly dancing has remained a fairly constant means of interpretation and entertainment. Modern society has not in any way detracted from the mysticism and sensuality of the belly dance, in fact, it appears as we have embraced it.

The benefits of belly dancing:

  • If you are slightly more curvaceous than your sisters , throw away any negative thoughts and embrace your body, let belly dancing teach you a new confidence.
  • There is no impact on your joints because the dance is mostly subtle hip movements and hand gestures.
  • Gentle weight-loss will occur naturally because of the physical requirements of the dance and your increased rate.
  • Belly and pelvic muscles also get a good work-out.

Styles of belly dancing

There are many different styles of belly dance all very similar but with subtle differences in postures and gestures. The most obvious difference would be the costume and make-up. The most popular styles of belly dance are differentiated by their origion:

  • Egyptian (Raks Sharqi)
  • Egyptian Baladi
  • Turkish
  • Lebanese
  • American Cabaret
  • American Tribal Style (which is probably the furthest up the evolutionary ladder)

Costuming and make-up play a very important part in belly dancing. The costumes worn for a particular style of dance will be reminiscent of the land of origion. Suggestive yet never revealing these costume allow the dancer to portray the story in her dance with comfort and ease while still remaining flattering to both the dancer and the dance. And in most cases respectful of the observer.

Belly dance competitions

Belly dance competitions are held at all levels, from local to provincial and national. Miss Belly dance SA was recently crowned at a glamorous event at the Roodepoort Theatre in Johannesburg. Styles ranged from Solo, to Teen, including props and without props, Adult Fusion and even Modern. All of these different categories for the competition only prove how all enbracing belly dancing really is.

Introductions to belly dancing.

Leave being shy at the door and attend a belly dancing class, one won't be enough, the fun and the new found confidence will have you going back for more. Many girls are introduced to belly dancing at a bachelorette or hen party where one of the fun things to do is have all the guests involved in their first belly dancing lesson. Once these ladies realise just how much fun it is they find themselves signing up for regular belly dancing lessons.

The history of belly dancing is as rich and evocative as the dancing is itself and by spending some time having fun while practicing belly dance you will be adding to that richness.
