What is hydraulics?

Hydraulics are present in a large percentage of our everyday lives. These instances are not glaringly obvious but they do allow for many of the things we use in our daily lives to function smoothly.

The brakes on a car and the doors on a bus, and those little arms the hold the boot door of your car up so it doesn't crash down on you when you let go are all simple and small applications of Hydraulics; the science behind liquid in motion.

When you fly somewhere and you look out of the window of the aeroplane you can sometimes see the tips of the wings moving, to guide the aeroplane on its course, this is the result of hydraulics at work.

The hydraulic systems we've just mentioned are some of the less elaborate and more common applications. There are however hydraulic manufacturers in Johannesburg who manufacture, repair and supply hydraulic equipment.

Hydraulic systems enable flexible design

One of the benefits of using hydraulic components is that they can be custom designed to suit the application for which they are intended. The strength and size of the application are easily manipulated as the chief component is liquid.

Applications of hydraulic systems include:

  • Engineering
  • Manufacturing
  • Mining
  • Construction
  • Gas and oil mining
  • Refinery
  • Farming

The above examples are indicative of the flexibility of hydraulic systems.

Hydraulic manufacturing and maintenance

Many hydraulic systems are manufactured in Europe or America which makes aquiring new parts and repairs more costly. There are however companies in Johannesburg who design and manufacture components for hydraulic systems and are able to test and repair existing hydraulic systems.

Because so many hydraulic systems were imported into the country at great expense to the companies which make use of them it is better that they are not replaced but rather that any repairs or adjustments are done by a company that can meet these requirements through holding and having access to the same brand of hydraulic equipment.

South African Companies who specialise in Hydraulics

There are numerous companies who specialise in hydraulic systems in South Africa, some in the import and export of equipment, and some in manufacture. there however only a few who design, manufacture, repair and supply new components.

One such comapny is Pro-Hyd, who have branches in Jophannesburg and in Pretoria. Pro-Hyd are designers, manufacturers and repairmen of hydraulic components, and this is applicable to all hydraulic pumps, motors, valves, equipment and spares.

Pro-Hyd are also importers and local suppliers of internation brands such as Kawasaki Hydraulics, Eaton Pumps, Parker, Poclain and also Nachi Hydraulics.
